Dog Tested. Dog Approved. Traveling with Your Furry Friends!

Road Trips with Best Friends!

If you follow I Love Rescue Animals on twitter or facebook, then you have probably seen us post pictures of our adventures traveling with our pups. Ash and I love to travel, especially when it means going anywhere with our three boys. We’re lucky in that all of our dogs love to ride in the car, and they are wonderful on even the longest road trip (we’ve moved cross-country twice and they took it all in stride).

One of our favorite things to do is go camping. Last year, we took all the pups on a camping trip in the Ozarks and had an absolute blast. They loved it too, though in our tiny car, it was a pretty tight squeeze. I think it’s one of the reasons that Ash and I want to own a Subaru someday. Having a car with space enough for us, the pups, our camping gear, and all their camping gear (they have their own pup tent!) would be a dream come true. Especially if they got to test drive the vehicle first.

Dog Test. Dog Approved. Licensed to Drive!

But they can’t test drive it without having a license! Well hey guess what – they have an app for that! Check out the Subaru Facebook App! You can check out videos from Subaru’s “Dog Tested. Dog Approved” campaign, as well as create a license for your very own furry driver! Look, even Spunky as has one!

Go check out the app and make one for your own pup and share it with us in the comments (but don’t forget to come up with a fun address just for your pup – don’t use your real one!). We’d love to see what your cute furry driver looks like. And if you have any questions, don’t forget to ask the expert on the Subaru app! Now that your dog is licensed to drive, where are you headed?

How Animal People Prepare to Go Anywhere (And Letting the Furkids Run the Show)

Who’s Running the Show?

Here in the ILRA household, our furkids run the show. For everything! When we move into a new house, guess who gets the nicest bedroom with all the windows and the best views of the squirrels and birds. I’ll give you a hint: not us! Guess who sets our schedule and makes us leave fun events so we can get home in time for dinner. Here’s another hint: not us! We vacuum every single day and yet the fur keeps coming. We go through cases upon cases and bags upon bags of pet food and still they want more! The dogs have almost as many clothes as we do! Even the rats always got Christmas presents! We can’t go anywhere without people knowing we have a menagerie either because, well, you know: How Animal People Prepare to Go Anywhere

The Dream Car

And who, ultimately, is behind the cars we want to drive? You don’t need another hint, right? We don’t want a sports car! Our dream car, quite seriously, is a Subaru Forester. Why? So we can grab the dogs, throw some camping gear in the back and go spend the weekend at a state park without having to cram stuff into every last tiny crevice of my tiny car. Trust me, with 3 dogs and all their bowls, food, leashes, toys, hiking bags, seat belts and even a pop-up kennel, there’s barely any room to fit Nikki and I in there! Some people may think we’re crazy. In fact, I think most people do. But other animal people, I know, can totally relate to why we let our kids run our lives. If they could personally choose their own vehicle, I’m sure we’d let them do that too.

Pretty sure I know what car they’d pick out too. Picking Out a New Car

In a couple weeks we’ll also talk about some cool new apps on the Subaru Facebook page so look for that! Trust me, I’ve already been having lots of fun playing with them so I know you will too!

It’s Time for Puppy Bowl 2013!

It’s that time once again! This weekend they will gather on the field and prepare to do battle for everlasting glory. All eyes will be upon them, watching, waiting, hoping. They’ll take that ball and they’ll run with it, to the 30, the 20, the 10, TOUCHDOWN! They’ll turn to the cameras and… scratch that itch behind their ear. I am, of course, talking about the Puppy Bowl! It’s an annual tradition in our household to watch the Puppy Bowl and I’m sure the same can be said for a lot of you. Yes, even those of you who really just watch it for the Kitty Halftime Show. It’s okay, you can admit it. We’re suckers for all species of cuteness too!

Introducing… the Puppy Bowl App!

While you’re preparing for the big day, don’t forget to download the awesome new Puppy Bowl Co-Viewing App, presented by Subaru. It’s available for free from the iTunes store and you can download it to your tablet or phone. The app will expand your Puppy Bowl viewing experience by interacting with what’s happening on your TV and providing additional content. LIVE during the broadcast! (The app will also work with the re-air, since you know you’ll want to watch it twice.) The Puppy Bowl Co-Viewing app can be downloaded beforehand so you can have it all ready to go when the Puppy Bowl airs this Sunday, February 3, at 3:00 pm e/p.

Just like the Super Bowl, the commercials are always something to look forward to as well. And it’s like a bajillion times better because they’re pretty much all filled with animals! Does it get any better than that? Some of our favorites are always the Subaru “Dog Tested. Dog Approved.™” commercials. They’re cute, clever and, best of all, they use actual adopted shelter dogs! To get you good and pumped for game day, here’s a sneak peak at one of their new commercials: Tailgating Those pups are ready for the big game. Are you? With the Puppy Bowl Co-Viewing App, you’ll be the talk of the dog park!

This is the third part to our Pets Add Life posts: Part I & Part II

Giving Thanks for Fur

With Thanksgiving and the Holiday season upon us, we have quite a bit to reflect on and much to be thankful for. In our household, we are constantly reminded of how lucky we are to always be surrounded by unconditional love from our furkids. The look of adoration from our oldest dog, the sweet kisses of a cat curled up in our laps, the warm, furry foot-heater of a little dog at the end of the bed – we are surrounded every day by the faces we are most thankful for. It’s true when they say, “Who rescued who?” I don’t know where we would be without them.

So in our final Pets Add Life post, we are taking the time to look at some of the silliest things our cat Merlin has done this past year. You’ve probably seen photos of Merlin here or on our Facebook and Twitter account. He’s a gorgeous classic tabby cat who, for the most part, believes himself to be the greatest of all tigers – proud, noble, distinguished.

Well… for the most part. 😉

Bag or box, Merlin doesn’t care. All he sees is a great place to sit.

Merlin hiding in the smallest box he can find.

Here he is attempting to jump through hoops a giant dog cone. Good job, kitten.

Oh silly kitten. We love you. 🙂

Pets Add Life for Kids too!

Kids and animals go hand in hand! I’m super excited about this so I wanted to make sure to include it in this post. Pets Add Life is doing their 5th Annual Pets Add Life Children’s Poetry Contest! If you’re a teacher, grades 3rd-8th or parent, enter your kids in the 5th Annual Pets Add Life Children’s Poetry Contest for a chance to win these awesome prizes:

  • A $1,000 scholarship for each winning student’s classroom
  • A $250 gift certificate for pet products
  • And, a “by·line” in a nationally circulated magazine!

How fantastic is that? In all, 6 children will be chosen as winners. And it couldn’t be easier to enter! Kids simply write a poem about their pet and the joys they bring, and post it online. You can find more of the details over on the Pets Add Life Children’s Poetry Contest page. Good luck! The deadline is January 31, 2013!

Also be sure to check out the past winners – these kids are so talented!

Review Time! Nutrish: Naturally Delish!

If you follow our Facebook or Twitter accounts, you’ve probably seen a few pictures of us with food (and the dogs with food, and the cats with food, etc). So it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that the whole family is a family of Foodies. We love food. We love GOOD food – wholesome, tasty, natural foods that are good for the body and mind. When we were approached to take part in a review for Rachael Ray’s Nutrish Naturally Delish, her newest dog food, both us AND our awesome foster dog Angel were only too happy to help. We’ve teamed up with the Nutrish crew to help shelters before so we know what awesome folks they are.

Naturally Delish is Naturally Delicious!

Right off the bat, I loved this product. Look at the awesome packaging it came in! How pretty! (What? I’m a designer and brand strategist – I LOVE great package designs.) Rachael Ray’s got great style. But on to the food…

Due to our budget, we can’t always feed our fosters up to the same standard that we feed our own kids, so we’re really excited to have this chance to feed Angel food that we’d be happy giving to our dogs. The ingredients list impressed us before we even opened the container. Naturally Delish “is made with simple, wholesome natural ingredients plus essential vitamins and minerals, has no corn, no wheat*, no soy, has no meat by-products or fillers, and has no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.” For instance, the first ingredients in the Hearty Beef Stew recipe are beef broth, beef, dried egg product, chicken, pea protein, potatoes, carrots, and peas. Yum right?

*The Chicken Muttballs recipe contains pasta made with semolina wheat flour.)

Angel’s Verdict: Yum?

Angel thinks so! Look at her go at it! She absolutely loves it and ate it within minutes. And boy did it smell good – all the other puppies were so jealous (and it smelled good to us too)!

Big Dog Tip: Angel is a big dog, she’s a beautiful pit mix after all, so often times when we get good food like this, to make it last, we’ve found that wet food makes a great supplement to her hard food – gives it some pizzazz! So if you have a big dog too and you’d like to spice up your canine friend’s dinner, make it a yummy side dish. The stews especially make a very nice gravy for any dry dog food.

Giveaway Time!

Nutrish was awesome enough to send us an identical package to do as a giveaway. Because we do quite a bit of local rescue work, we decided to take this opportunity to share our good fortune with one of our local rescues or shelters. Below you will find links to four of our favorite local animal shelters – please take a moment to check out each of them and cast your vote by telling us who should get the package of Nutrish Naturally Delish in our comments!

01. Austin Animal Center
02. Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter
03. Pflugerville Animal Shelter
04. PAWS Shelter and Humane Society

We’ll close the poll and announce the winner on Friday, August 17th. Don’t forget to comment!

Another Reason to Love Rachael Ray

Have you heard about Rachael’s Rescue? Rachael Ray isn’t just an awesome chef (we love her cookbooks in our kitchen!) – she’s also an animal advocate and proceeds from her Nutrish dog food have gone on to help so many animals in need.

“Heartbroken by the thought of the millions of mistreated and abandoned animals taken in by shelters each year, Rachael has created the Rachael’s Rescue website to highlight organizations that are dedicated to helping animals in need. In support of their work, she’s also launched a new line of pet food called Rachael Ray Nutrish™. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of these products will go to organizations such as North Shore Animal League America, Bad Rap, ASPCA, and more.”

To date, Rachael Ray and Nutrish have donated more than four million dollars to non-profit animal welfare organizations. How awesome is she? She makes great food for people AND dogs AND she gives back to a community in need. Thanks Rachael Ray!
