365DAA Day 48: Good Mews Metro Atlanta Area Cat Shelter

“1988-2011… 23 years of purrs… 23 years of purpose…” That’s what it says when you go to the Good Mews Metro Atlanta Area Cat Shelter website. It fills my heart with hope that there are groups out there that have been dedicated to animals for that long. They haven’t given up, and neither will we. We are so happy to add another cat group to our project. Give some support to this awesome group!

About Good Mews Metro Atlanta Area Cat Shelter

Good Mews offers an alternative to traditional animal shelters in the Metro Atlanta area by providing a no-kill, cage-free haven for homeless, abused, or abandoned cats until placing them in permanent, loving homes. Good Mews promotes public awareness regarding the value of pets, animal welfare, pet overpopulation, and quality human-animal companionship through education and outreach programs.

Good Mews is one of the few virtually cage-free, no-kill cat shelters in the State of Georgia. Since 1988, Good Mews has placed approximately 5,000 cats in permanent homes. The shelter receives no government support, relying solely on donations of time, service and money from its supporters, the public and area businesses. Good Mews is home to approximately 100 residents at any given time, most of whom live at the shelter; some also reside in foster care.

Good Mews provides our residents with regular meals and extensive medical care. The only time our cats are caged is for medical observation and a two week quarantine period upon arrival to the shelter. Once a cat has been accepted into the shelter population, it has a home for life. No cat is ever euthanized to make room for another, and is performed ONLY when a veterinarian has diagnosed that the cat’s quality of life is severely and permanently compromised by sickness or injury

Our cats come to us from a variety of circumstances. Many of our residents arrive abused, neglected and terribly afraid. Often times, these cats are in urgent need of medical care. During recuperation, our dedicated staff of volunteers spend countless hours cuddling and grooming the cats while they heal so theywill start to trust humans again.

365DAA Day 47: Crash’s Landing Cat Rescue and Placement Center

We here at ILRA have a huge love for black cats. So we are especially fond of Crash, the black cat that today’s group is named after. He was also hit by a car and left to die, just like our own O’Malley, and we understand how hard that can be. So it is our pleasure to support Crash’s Landing Cat Rescue and Placement Center and all the awesome kitty cats they have saved through their hard work and dedication.

About Crash’s Landing Cat Rescue and Placement Center

Crash’s Landing is a non-profit, no-kill, cage-free cat rescue and placement center. We opened our doors in Grand Rapids, Michigan on October 21, 2002. Since then, we have been taking in unwanted, abandoned, and neglected cats and giving them a second chance. We do not take in owner surrenders or kittens under 6 months – instead we focus our efforts on getting adult cats off the streets. In our short existence we have had over 2800 success stories (and counting!).

Crash’s Landing was founded by veterinarian, Dr. Jennifer Petrovich. Dr. Jen is a wife, mom and non-stop miracle worker for some 240 cats at any given time. Crash’s Landing is Dr. Jen’s dream and 190+ non-paid volunteers help to insure that her dream stays a reality. Our volunteers staff the shelter a minimum of 12 hours each day, 365 days a year. Crash’s could not exist without this dedicated group of people.

Crash’s Landing is actually a two shelter operation. Crash’s Landing houses over 125 adoptable, healthy cats. Big Sid’s Sanctuary is the Midwest’s largest FIV/FeLV rescue shelter. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (similar to HIV in humans) and Feline Leukemia Virus are viewed as automatic death sentences at the majority of shelters and humane societies, but not at Sid’s. Through education, we hope to put an end to the stigma that surrounds these diseases. Big Sid’s provides more than 110 “Sid’s Kids” all the comforts of home. The immune systems of these cats may be more fragile than their “normal” counterparts, but they can still live long, happy lives when given the chance.

Crash’s Landing is a 501c3 non-profit shelter. We do not receive any Federal or State grant monies to run our programs. We run solely on donations and sponsorships from caring individuals who believe in our cause. At Crash’s our motto is “saving our little corner of the world, one cat at a time”.

365DAA Day 46: Amazon CARES

The are so many words I could use to describe Molly Mednikow, founder and Executive Director of our next group. Amazing, selfless, fantastic, wonderful, incredible, fascinating, beautiful, dedicated – all those come to mind. But I think the best word that describes our friend Molly is this: Inspiring. She took something that touched her heart, a path in life that went deep into her soul, and she built it from the ground up. Amazon Community Animal Rescue, Education & Safety, or better known as Amazon CARES, is a remarkable program that is dedicated to improving the lives of animals in the Amazon and there is no other program like it – it is the first of its kind. After seeing first hand how animals were treated and what little vet care they were given, Molly started the program and has dedicated her life to improving the Amazon, one animal at a time.

We are so honored to not only call Molly a friend, but also to showcase her and her program as today’s t-shirt. Thank you Molly! Both for what you do for the animal world AND for the amazing sweatshirts you made both Ash and I. These are so awesome – we love them and wear them everywhere. You are a rockstar!

Also check out the back of this sweatshirt – Molly had them personalized for both of us! (Mine says Nikki, of course.)

About Amazon CARES

Amazon Community Animal Rescue, Education and Safety addresses vital topics important to a healthy community environment in Peru’s remote Amazon region. We do this through ongoing projects.

Studies show a strong link between animal and community health. We saw this with our own eyes, and created essential programs that benefit the community as a whole. The world is focused on the important global and environmental issues facing the Amazon Rain forest region. Naturalists, biologists, environmentalists and wandering souls visit Iquitos in droves. Sadly, this region had NO programs in place for DOMESTIC animal welfare.

This is the reason that Amazon Community Animal Rescue, Education and Safety (CARES) was founded in 2004. Citizens with a desire to protect countless stray animals stepped in to create programs that the government did not provide. Since 2004, CARES has made amazing progress in the promotion of animal and public health.

365DAA Day 45: Wishcuit

I dare you to read the about page on the site of today’s group: Wishcuit. I couldn’t get through it without tearing up. Sadly, we’ve probably all been there and have had to say good bye to a dear friend. Kelly took the love her best friend gave her and used it to forward the mission of her business. She says, “I combined my wish to help dogs with these tiny biscuits, and that’s how Wishcuit came to be. I followed my heart and the rest as they say is how it was meant to be!” You are amazing Kelly, thanks you for being such an awesome friend to canines everywhere!

About Wishcuit

Wishcuit™ (rhymes with “biscuit”) is dedicated to improving the lives of all dogs, and supports efforts that improve their health and welfare through various campaigns. The idea is simple. By providing unique products at a great value, we pay it forward to help our canine friends. That is the Wishcuit mission.

The Love Adds Up™ campaign focuses on rescues that offer shelter & adoption programs, and organizations that provide treatment, and are working toward finding a cure for canine cancer.

“The love and companionship that my dogs bring to my life, reminds me daily of the simplicities of life, and to live each and every moment to the fullest. What they give without conditions is my inspiration.

I appreciate you taking the time to visit the Wishcuit web site. Hug your dog, and enjoy the moments, and always follow your heart. Good things will happen…”

365DAA Day 44: Happy Tails Books

I’ll say first that I wish we had aligned our days better and done this post yesterday, but today works too. Yesterday happened to be our friend Kyla Duffy’s birthday as well as opening night of her new show benefiting rescue animals “Don’t Kill Bill”. She also happens to be the founder of today’s project, Happy Tails Books, and an amazing person and friend. I’m so happy that we are able to highlight her work in today’s post. Thanks for being so awesome Kyla (and sending us so many shirts)!

About Happy Tails Books

Happy Tails Books is the premiere publisher of books about adopted pets and rescued animals. Our goal is to encourage pet adoption and raise awareness about private rescue organizations to decrease the number of homeless pets. Happy Tails Books uses the written word to share the joy adopted pets bring to their new homes in an effort to raise awareness and funding for rescues and encourage adoption.

The president of Happy Tails Books recently founded Up For Pups, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, to further Happy Tails Books’ humane education mission. One of Up For Pups’ first initiatives is the Don’t Kill Bill stage show to raise awareness about the connection between pet shops and puppy mills and to encourage animal rescue volunteering.
