365DAA 2012 Day 1: Animal Trustees of Austin

Gong Xi Fa Cai! Happy Chinese New Year to you all! And welcome to 365 Days of Animal Advocacy 2012! That’s right, we’re back with all our old animal group pals as well as some new ones! For those of you who missed it last year, 365 Days of Animal Advocacy is our pet project where I (Ashley) am going to wear a different animal welfare related shirt every single day of the year! Or at least as long as I can until we run out of shirts. Last year we made it through 52 days, which, while no where near 365, still raised a lot of awareness for those groups involved and taught us a lot about the logistics of making this project work. If we don’t make it this year, we’ll try it the next year and the next year after that until we make it happen. It’s a really fun project and a unique way for us and you to raise awareness for your favorite animal shelters, charities, organizations, spay/neuter clinics, etc.

We decided to begin this year’s 365DAA on Chinese New Year to show that we are very hopeful to expand into more international animal groups this year. Last year we had two, from Egypt & Peru, so it can be done and we can’t wait to see how far we can reach this year! After all, our mission statement says “We are dedicated to celebrating rescued animals, supporting shelters, rescues and animal rights groups and to animal welfare WORLDWIDE.” I am so excited to see where this project takes us this year and I hope you’ll join us and help us spread the word and celebrate animals right along with us!

Of course, we are also huge advocates of doing what you can in your own backyard so we are kicking 2012 off with one of our favorite local groups, Animal Trustees of Austin! We have used their low-cost spay and neuter clinic to get Snarf, Cleo and Satsuki fixed and use their wellness clinic to get all of our kids’ annual vaccinations. They have programs for helping the animals of homeless people and offer free microchips to the most low-income zip codes in Austin. It is always clean, everyone is always professional and they use all the latest information to keep animals as safe as possible (i.e. only offering one year rabies for cats since they have a lower risk of injection site sarcomas). They are also very rescue friendly and almost every time we go there we meet someone else involved in animal rescue there. We trust them with our kids so that should say it all right there!

About ATA

In May of 1993, a group of women came together to rescue a tiny Chihuahua called Keller, who was born with no eyes. The spirit of that little dog sparked a desire to help lost, abused, and abandoned animals in Austin, Texas and surrounding counties and started what is now Animal Trustees of Austin.

Since then, the organization has grown to include clinics for both wellness and spay/neuter services, provides a variety of programs for animal welfare, and hosts several fundraising events for animal lovers throughout the year.

In an effort to end the crisis of animal overpopulation, the Spay/Neuter Clinic has safely performed over 85,000 surgeries since March 1997, and our Wellness Clinic, begun in June of 2002, has provided services to over 131,000 animals.

Additionally, Animal Trustees of Austin has been chosen to be a part of the ASPCA’s Mission: Orange program, a focused effort to create a country of humane communities where animals receive the compassion and respect due to them. The ASPCA targets communities nationwide by including and cooperating with area animal-welfare agencies and organizations. ATA is proud to be a partner organization in ASPCA’s Mission: Orange program in Central Texas along with Town Lake Animal Shelter, the Austin Humane Society, and EmanciPET.
